Enterococcus faecium is a bacterium that can occur in the intestines and may be part of the normal gut microbiome. Compared with Enterococcus faecalis, this species is often more relevant as an opportunistic bacterium, meaning it may become more noticeable when the gut environment is disturbed or when normal microbial competition is reduced. Higher levels may reflect a shift toward bacteria that tolerate a less balanced gut environment. This may be seen together with changes in stool quality, gas, mucus in stool, or other signs of digestive imbalance.
